Dear Mr. Zuroff,
In the Charlotte Observer article of Sept. 15, ("Nazi Hunter Wants
U.S., Austria's and Hungary's
Suspects") describes your eagerness to supply Serbia with
information regarding three persons who were responsible for the
killing of Jews in WWII. Judging by their names, they were not
Serbs.
Did you ever try to find out the names of Serbs who killed Jews in
Serbia during WWII?
Throughout these past years you seem to have had a special interest
in accusing Croatia as being fascist, which is absurd, when you
consider the attitude of Croatians regarding Jews throughout
Croatia's history. The four years of the so-called "independent
Croatia"
NDH, in which
Croatia was a puppet of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, obeying
their orders in regard to Jews was a terrible tragedy, not only for
the Jews but also for the Croatian people who were powerless against
a government domineered by the Axis. To this day, Mr. Zuroff, you
continue to let the world believe that Jasenovac was one of the
largest concentration camps killing Jews. Why this misleading?
How can the tragedy of some 30,000 Jews who were killed in Jasenovac
be compared to the 300,000 killed in Hungary and some 500,000 killed
in Romania? While Croatia has honored the victims of Jasenovac for
some time now, Hungary and Romania have admitted their guilt only
recently.
Most dismaying and disconcerting is your steadfast affinity for
Serbia and your total disregard regarding Nazi Serbia's role during
WWII under General Nedic in the killing of its Jews. (95% of Jews
living in Serbia during WWII were exterminated according to the
Encyclopedia of the Holocaust). Cleverly, Serbs dismantled their
concentration camps after WWII, so no trace can be found and fooled
the world pretending that the Germans did all the killing while the
Serbs were innocent of any crimes. - As innocent as they were in
Vukovar, Srebrenica and wherever they raised their bloody hands
against Croatia and Bosnia!
It should be remembered that the Serbian Orthodox Church openly
collaborated with the Nazis.
In Aug. 1941 some 500 distinguished Serbs signed "An appeal to the
Serbian nation" calling for loyalty to the Nazis. The first three
signers were Serb Orthodox bishops.
(MIDSTREAM, A
Monthly Jewish Review, 11-92, "Holocaust History Misappropriated").
Not long after, Belgrade was declared the first "Jew free ("Judenfrei)"
city of Europe. This attitude toward Jews was nothing new in Serbia,
as antisemitism was fostered by the state and Orthodox Church since
the early 1800's. (Again: Midstream Nov. 1992).
Isn't it time for you to take a good look at Serbia's actual history
instead of accepting their decades of propaganda? Serbia has been
totally exonerated of any guilt, thanks to people like you, people
of the "Serbian Jewish Friendship Society" and probably others in
Serbia and the U.S. while it remains guilty of much and conveniently
lives in perpetual denial.
Sincerely,
Hilda M. Foley
