JANUARY 17–28

FINE MRTVE DJEVOJKE (Fine Dead Girls) 2002. Croatia. Directed by Dalibor Matanic. With Olga Pakalovic, Nina Violic, Inge Appelt, Kresimir Mikic, Ivica Vidovic.

A report of a kidnapped child triggers an investigation that uncovers nightmarish conditions in a seedy apartment building in Zagreb. When the residents learn the truth about each other, the pervasive climate of mistrust in the building explodes into violence. This fast-paced and well-directed feature evinces vivid echoes of Croatia’s troubled recent history. In Croatian, English subtitles. 77 min.

Thursday, January 18, 8:30; Sunday, January 28, 2:00

TA DIVNA SPLITSKA NOC (A Wonderful Night in Split) 2004. Croatia. Written and directed by Arsen Anton Ostojic. With Dino Dvornik, Marinko Prga, Mladen Vulic, Marija Skaricic. Set in a ghetto in the medieval city of Split, several parallel stories unfold between ten o’clock and midnight on New Year’s Eve, as crowds gather in the old square to listen to a rock concert. Drugs and violence con-spire to unravel the barely intersecting lives in this Quentin Tarantino–inspired tale of marginalized characters hardened by war and overpowering social misery. In Croatian, English; English subtitles. 100 min.
